About the Artwork

Bennett Hawthorne built this piece the way a canyon builds itself, one layer at a time. Thick slabs of sandstone ochre, dusty pink and driftwood grey stack across the canvas on a gentle slant, each one pulled flat with a palette knife so the edges curl and crack like weathered rock. A thin fissure of slate lavender runs through the stack, with a single band of burnt orange glowing near the bottom.

This earth tone abstract wall art is all about surface. The impasto ridges catch light differently through the day, so the bands seem to shift from soft and chalky in the morning to deep and shadowed by evening. It reads as calm from across the room and rewards a close look with every knife mark and torn edge.

It suits anyone who loves desert hikes, layered stone and warm, quiet color, or who wants textured abstract wall art that feels grounded instead of busy. The palette works easily with linen, wood, clay and leather, so it fits right in with natural, lived-in homes.

Hang it over a sofa as neutral living room wall art, or give it a wall of its own as neutral wall art for dining room settings where it can be seen during long dinners. Printed as canvas wall art, it keeps the depth and warmth of the original painting.

After years mixing cocktails in Manhattan dive bars, I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2015. The morning fog rolling over these hills reminded me why I loved painting before life got complicated. Now I spend my days chasing that soft light through the seasons.
