About the Artwork

Twelve soft, rounded blocks puff out of this canvas like a tufted cushion you want to press your hand into. Matthew Calhoun built each pillow shape with thick palette-knife impasto in cream, sand and warm tan, leaving small sunken seams where the forms meet and letting smudges of charcoal gray settle into the hollows.

The surface does most of the talking. Sweeping knife strokes crack and layer across every block, and a few thin vertical drips run down through the gaps at the bottom edge. It reads as sculptural wall art even in print, a quiet piece of wabi sabi wall art that celebrates worn, imperfect texture over polish.

This one is for people who like their walls calm but not flat. If you lean toward japandi wall art, soft upholstery and natural linen, or you have been looking for 3d textured wall art that keeps to a neutral palette, these cushioned forms will feel right at home.

My studio is an old net loft near the water in Mystic, where the fog rolls in most mornings. Varnishing boat hulls taught me patience with layers and respect for drying time. I build my textured abstracts slowly, troweling sand and fog-colored plaster in thin coats, then brushing faint pale gold into the ridges so the surface warms as the light shifts.
