About the Artwork

Ryan Mitchell built this abstract grid painting one square at a time. Each block of black, graphite, silver grey or white was laid down with a palette knife, and he pulled the paint in a different direction on every one, so the ridges cross and catch the light at their own angles. Thin drips run down from the bottom row into the pale ground below.

The grid stays loose on purpose. Blocks lean, overlap and leave dark smudged edges behind them, which keeps the whole thing feeling made by hand rather than measured. It reads as monochrome abstract wall art with real texture you can see from across the room.

This is for anyone who likes a calm, sophisticated abstract wall art piece with a little grit in it. If your space already leans neutral, the mix of deep black and soft cream gives it weight without adding color.

As black and white canvas wall art, it works over a sofa as black and white abstract art for living room walls, and it makes easy modern office wall art behind a desk or in a conference room. Hang it at eye level where the knife marks can be seen up close.

Moving back to Chicago in 2019 after college in Milwaukee made me notice how the skyline changes throughout the day. I quit selling condos downtown to paint the city's moods instead. My impressionist cityscapes try to capture Chicago's energy between seasons.
