About the Artwork

This desert landscape painting opens up wide. A tall flat-topped mesa holds the left side, its cliffs cut into rust and violet columns. A lone butte answers it on the right, and a faint blue ridge sits far off between them. Up top, a pale evening sky drifts in long cream and blue strokes.

Emory Thatcher built every layer with a palette knife. The paint sits thick and ridged, so the sand flats, the sagebrush clumps and the shadowed slopes all catch real light. Up close it reads as slabs of colour. Step back and the whole valley falls into place.

It's for anyone who loves desert wall art with some texture to it, or wants modern southwest art that still feels rooted in the land. If you've driven through mesa country and keep thinking about it, this one brings that quiet stretch home.

As western canvas wall art, it suits a living room above the sofa, a long hallway or a study with warm wood and leather. Chosen in a bigger size, it works as large western wall art for an open wall, and it pairs easily with other western canvas prints in rust, sand and blue.

A week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009 taught me to see water differently. The way morning light hit the lake surface became an obsession I'm still chasing in every painting.
