About the Artwork

Someone was just here. A mustard armchair sits beside a tall wooden bookshelf, and an open book rests face-down across the seat cushion, spine up, waiting for its reader to come back with a fresh cup of coffee. Esteban Olivares painted it with a palette knife, laying down thick, blocky strokes of ochre, tan and olive that turn the upholstery into a patchwork of light.

The same broken strokes run through the pale blue-gray wall and the warm floor, so the whole room feels textured and lived in. The book spines on the shelf are quick slabs of dusty rose, cream, olive and navy. It reads as quiet and cozy, the kind of hygge decor that does not need to try hard.

This is den wall art for the reader in the house, the one who always has three books going at once. It makes thoughtful book lover wall art for a gift, and its golden tones work well for anyone looking for mustard yellow wall art that still feels soft and grounded.

Hang this canvas wall art above a reading chair, beside a home library shelf, or in a den or study. It also fits easily as living room wall art next to wood furniture, warm lamps and well-worn rugs.

I look for a scene where color sits in clean planes: a whitewashed wall, an orange tree, a quiet patio with warm stone against cool shade. Years restoring ceramic tiles gave me patience for that. Above a bakery in Triana, with the smell of bread around me, I lay it down in thick knife slabs. The scrape marks stay.
