About the Artwork

This dark brown painting keeps things simple: a rounded walnut-brown stoneware jug with a small loop handle, set on a plain tabletop beside two ripe pears. Maren Hollis built every form from thick palette knife slabs, so the glaze, the speckled pear skins and the tan wall behind them all read as chunky, layered strokes of paint.

A single low light comes in from the side and catches the ridges of the impasto. You see it in the bright flecks on the jug's shoulder, the warm blush on the front pear, and the soft shadow pooling across the table. It has the quiet, studied feel of an old kitchen still life without looking like a copy of one.

It suits anyone drawn to dark academia wall art, earthy kitchens and rooms full of books, wood and worn leather. If you like vintage moody wall art with a hand-made surface, this one has plenty of texture to look at up close.

As canvas wall art it settles well above a sideboard, in a dining nook or as brown wall art for living room shelves and mantels. The browns, tans and olive greens sit comfortably next to walnut furniture, linen and brass.

Working with patients taught me to see healing in unexpected places. I started painting scripture verses as gifts for my church family in 2019, but the abstract backgrounds began taking over the canvases. Now those color fields tell their own stories.
