About the Artwork

This contemporary dancer painting catches the moment a dancer kneels and arches all the way back, chest lifted, arms flung behind her, head dropped out of view. From her spine, a fan of brushstrokes opens like feathers in hot pink, turquoise, cobalt, orange and golden yellow against a charcoal-black ground.

Cole Whitman lays the color on thick with a palette knife, so the ridges wrap around her shoulders, ribs and thighs like a second skin. Paint drips run down from the fan, and the floor beneath her picks up the same streaks, keeping the whole piece moving.

It's dance wall art for people who know what a backbend costs: dancers, teachers, yoga folks and anyone who loves bold, physical color. As dancer wall art it makes a fine gift for a studio owner, and it sits easily beside other modern dance prints in a gallery wall.

Hang this dancer canvas art over a bed as dance bedroom decor, in a studio lobby, or above a sofa where the dark background can anchor the room. The canvas wall art holds up well in a bright space and glows against white or deep-toned walls.

I leave most of the scene out. What stays is the animal. Fifteen years working cattle in Montana made patience and observation a habit. I moved east in 2010, and I missed the animals from those endless prairie mornings. So I paint them, one bison or doe or cow at a time, a little open prairie for someone's home.
