About the Artwork

A red wooden sled with curled iron runners sits on a snowy slope, a fresh fir bough lashed across its slats and a loose rope trailing behind. Mateo Callahan built the snow from thick palette knife strokes in cream, aqua and lavender, scraping back passages and letting a few drips run down the edge. Behind it, the mountains glow under a sky of hot pink, tangerine and butter yellow.

This is one of our christmas paintings on canvas from the Retro Christmas collection, and it carries that old-fashioned feeling of hauling the tree home before dark. The color is loud and modern, though, so it reads as modern christmas wall art rather than a quaint card scene.

It suits anyone who grew up sledding, anyone who loves pastel christmas wall art, or anyone who wants vintage holiday wall art that doesn't look dusty. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a cabin owner or a winter sports fan.

As canvas wall art, it works above a fireplace as christmas mantel art, in an entryway, or as christmas wall art for living room walls that need a warm jolt of color through December and well into January.

My father's beehives taught me patience and the way light moves through morning fog. After dropping out of art school in 2018, I spent two years just watching how colors shift in the markets of Guadalajara before I felt ready to paint them.
