About the Artwork

A dozen closed books rise from a bare floor, stacked a little crooked the way real stacks get when you keep adding one more. Oxblood, mustard, slate green, plum and tan covers sit one on top of another, their cream page edges catching the light along one side.

Carter Ellison laid each book down in a single thick slab of paint with a palette knife, so every cover has ridges, scrapes and soft broken edges you can almost feel. The background is the same loose knife work in muted sage green, warming into ochre and brown where the floor begins. This book stack wall art is part of our Painted Reading Rooms collection.
