“Working night shifts at the hospital lab for six years taught me to see color differently under fluorescent lights. I'd come home at dawn and paint what I remembered from the world outside. My thick, textured landscapes try to capture that contrast between artificial and natural light.”

About Carter

Six years of night shifts in a hospital lab taught Carter Ellison to read color under fluorescent light. Coming home at dawn, the artist would paint the outside world from memory, and that tension between artificial and natural light still drives the work. Ellison holds a BFA from Cooper Union and now works from Denver, Colorado.

Thick, textured strokes of beige, brown, blue and red mark Ellison’s blend of impressionism and expressionism. Favorite scenes include the pier at Huntington Beach at sunrise, Portland’s Willamette River under Mount Hood, saguaros in Tucson’s Sonoran Desert and the jagged Bridger Range near Bozeman. These are Ellison’s best sellers in our shop, ready to hang.
