About the Artwork

This black wolf painting by Maren Carlisle catches a wolf standing square on a granite boulder, amber eyes fixed straight ahead. Behind him the sunset sky breaks into thick slabs of peach, tangerine and coral, fading to a strip of turquoise at the horizon.

Maren built the whole piece with a palette knife, so the paint sits in raised ridges you can almost feel. His dark coat is not just black. Look closer and you find violet, deep teal and smoky gray laid in short, feathered strokes, with lighter fur at the chest and legs. The boulder under his paws is cut in angular planes of purple, slate and turquoise, echoing the color in his fur.

It is a good fit for anyone who loves wolves, wild places and paintings with real texture. If you want a piece that feels calm and strong at the same time, this one holds its ground.

As canvas wall art, it works well above a sofa, in a den or a cabin-style bedroom, and it makes a striking large wolf canvas over a fireplace or in an entryway where the warm sunset tones can greet you.

After fifteen years decorating wedding cakes, I discovered that precision and color theory translated perfectly to canvas. My geometric work borrows from the clean lines I learned piping buttercream, but now I'm building layers of meaning instead of sugar.
