About the Artwork

An old cherry tree leans out over a quiet pond, its trunk twisting like it has weathered a hundred springs. Isla Penrose built that trunk from layered palette knife strokes in charcoal, slate, and warm taupe, so the bark looks carved rather than painted. Above it, the canopy bursts open in small raised clusters of white blossoms that catch the light.

Behind the tree, dark grey paint runs down in long vertical drags, like rain or mist falling over the water. The pond below picks it all up again in broken reflections. Working only in black, white, and grey, this piece has the calm restraint of a black and white cherry blossom art study, and it echoes the spirit of a traditional cherry blossom ink painting while staying thick and tactile.

It suits anyone who loves Japanese gardens and asian cherry blossom wall art but wants something quieter than pink. If you have been collecting cherry blossom art prints and need one that works with a neutral palette, this is a good place to start.

As canvas wall art, it sits well above a grey sofa, a low console in a minimalist living room, or a bed with crisp white linens. It also brings a peaceful focal point to a reading nook, office, or meditation corner.

Working nights at the shipyard in 2019, I started sketching the stray cats that hung around the docks. Those rough charcoal drawings of weathered toms and shy calicos became my first real paintings when I traded my torch for brushes.
