About the Artwork

This aurora borealis painting puts the sky in charge. Wide ribbons of teal and violet light sweep across a dark, star-flecked night, while below them a jagged range of snow-covered mountains catches warm streaks of gold and lavender. The frozen valley floor picks up the glow in broken patches of turquoise, cream, and ochre.

Reid Ashford built it with a palette knife, laying the paint on thick so every ridge and ice slab has real texture. The aurora is pulled in long vertical strokes, the peaks are carved in sharp angled planes, and the foreground is stacked in chunky slabs that almost feel like cracked ice underfoot. It reads as a winter scene painting with movement, not a still postcard.

It suits anyone who has chased the northern lights, hopes to someday, or simply loves cold, clear nights in the mountains. The mix of cool blues with sunny golds keeps it from feeling icy, so it works well for people who want winter on the wall without a gray mood.

As northern lights wall art, it makes a strong focal point above a sofa, a bed, or a fireplace mantel, and it pairs nicely with wood, stone, and soft neutral textiles. Printed as canvas wall art, the brushwork and color carry well across a room.

After five years pushing papers at an insurance company, I took a weekend painting class in 2016 that completely redirected my life. The instructor showed us how Monet built light with broken color, and I knew I had to learn that language. Now I spend my days chasing New England's shifting seasons with my easel.
