About the Artwork

Emory Thatcher laid this piece down one knife stroke at a time, each blade of paint swinging out from a single point near the bottom like a fan opening. The colors move in order: sunset apricot and creamy warm light on the left, then olive, burnt sienna, dusky violet, and finally sky cerulean and a cool sea green on the right.

The ridges and edges of the paint are what make it. You can see where the knife lifted and where the paint piled up, so even as a print it reads as a textured abstract canvas with real depth. The cream background is worked in the same loose, crosshatched strokes, giving it a layered abstract painting feel without competing with the fan.

This is for someone who likes color with a bit of order to it. It's cheerful but calm, and the warm-to-cool spectrum makes it easy to pull accent colors from for napkins, chair cushions, or a table runner.

As dining room abstract wall art, it hangs well above a sideboard or at the end of a long table, where the upward sweep draws the eye. It also works in a hallway or reading nook. This abstract canvas wall art brings warmth to cream, wood, and white walls alike.

A week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009 taught me to see water differently. The way morning light hit the lake surface became an obsession I'm still chasing in every painting.
