About the Artwork

This cherry painting plays a little trick on you. A plum-purple rotary telephone sits on a tabletop, its coiled cord looping loose, and right beside it a shallow bowl is heaped with cherries so plump they nearly rival the handset. Once you notice the scale, you can't stop smiling at it.

Emory Thatcher built the whole scene with a palette knife, laying down thick, flat slabs of paint in dusty blue, sand and ochre. The cherries glow in red and deep wine with green stems, and the phone's dial catches the light in creamy beige. It reads as a true textured painting canvas, with every knife stroke visible up close.

It's quirky wall art for anyone who loves old objects with a sense of humor, the person who keeps a working rotary phone just because, or who fills shelves with vintage eclectic decor and flea market finds.

Hang this canvas wall art in a breakfast nook as fun kitchen wall art, beside a dining table, or in a hallway where guests will stop and do a double take. It also pairs well with warm wood, brass lamps and mismatched frames.

Coral sliding into purple keeps showing up in my skies, and I stopped fighting it a long time ago. It goes back to a week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009, when I started looking at water differently. Morning light on a lake surface. I'm still chasing it in every painting.
