About the Artwork

Four cherry trees stand in a loose row, their dark trunks rising out of a soft wash of cream and dove grey. Fiona Callahan builds each canopy from wide, translucent palette knife swipes in blush, rose, mauve and pale plum, so the blossoms read as color and movement rather than individual petals.

Flecks and patches of metallic gold catch along the branches and scatter through the air, and thin drips of rose, grey and gold run down from the ground line like a reflection on wet earth. This abstract cherry blossom painting keeps the trees recognizable while letting the thick, sculpted paint do most of the talking.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves spring blossoms but wants something quieter and more modern than a botanical study. If you've been looking through cherry blossom art prints for one with real texture and a warm, muted palette, this one has that layered, hand-worked feel.

As canvas wall art, it sits nicely above a sofa, a bed with neutral linens, or a dining sideboard. The cream, blush and gold tones pair well with warm whites, soft wood, brass accents and linen textures.

After years staring at screens cutting film footage, I needed something tactile. Started with collages in my Brooklyn apartment in 2016, tearing up old magazines and newspapers. Now I layer paint over found materials, creating symbols that mean something different to everyone who sees them.
