“I paint in a small studio a few streets from the Thessaloniki waterfront, where the sea changes colour every hour. For years I mixed glazes in a ceramics workshop, which taught me how colours shift under heat and light. I lay boats, white houses and lemon trees in thick knife strokes of oil, hot ochre beside deep Aegean blue, with the ridges left proud.”
About Eleni
Eleni Markou paints in a small studio a few streets from the Thessaloniki waterfront, where the sea seems to change color every hour. She earned her degree in Fine Arts at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, then spent years as a glaze technician in a ceramics workshop. Mixing glazes taught her how colors shift under heat and light, how a blue can deepen or an ochre can warm in the kiln, and that lesson runs through every canvas she makes today.
Working in oil on linen with wooden-handled painting knives, Markou builds boats, whitewashed houses and lemon trees from thick, confident strokes, setting hot ochre beside deep Aegean blue and leaving the ridges of paint standing proud. Her style moves between Impressionism and a bolder modern sensibility, so the scenes feel sunlit and alive rather than postcard-perfect. These canvases bring Mediterranean warmth to a living room, a breakfast nook or a sunny kitchen, and they make a cheerful welcome in an entryway or a calm focal point in a bedroom. Below are Markou’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
