This diving board painting catches the pool at its quietest moment. A single cream board stretches out over the water, its shadow falling short and dark on the ripples below. Eleni Markou built the scene with a palette knife, laying down thick ridges of turquoise, cobalt and sand so the surface looks like it is still moving.

Up close you can see every stroke. Pale crests of paint catch the light the way sun flickers on water, and the warm tan deck tiles at the bottom anchor the cool blues. I paint in a small studio a few streets from the Thessaloniki waterfront, where the sea changes colour every hour. For years I mixed glazes in a ceramics workshop, which taught me how colours shift under heat and light. I lay boats, white houses and lemon trees in thick knife strokes of oil, hot ochre beside deep Aegean blue, with the ridges left proud.
