About the Artwork

Leo Hartwell painted this woman reclining painting with a slow, mid-century hand. She stretches the full length of an emerald velvet chaise, a cream gown pooling past her bare feet, one arm lifted to hold a martini glass with a sip of amber left in it. Her face is a smooth, turned-away oval with no features, so the pose does all the talking.

The brushwork stays visible everywhere. Thick, ridged strokes build the folds of the gown, the chaise sits on tapered wooden legs, and a hazy charcoal wall swirls behind her with a single burnt-amber moon hanging in the corner. It reads as moody wall art without ever feeling heavy, more like the quiet end of a good evening.

This is for anyone who loves a retro cocktail mood and feminine wall art with some calm confidence. Fans of martini wall art and old lounge glamour will find a lot to like, and so will anyone who simply wants a woman on sofa painting that feels relaxed instead of posed.

Hang this canvas wall art above a bar cart as home bar wall art, in a dining nook, or over a sofa in a living room with green or brass accents. It works just as well as bar wall decor in a speakeasy-style basement, and it adds a soft touch of emerald green wall art to a bedroom or reading corner.

I designed printed fabrics for a mill in Long Beach for eleven years, and I still think in a few simple shapes: a leaf, a pebble, a half-circle. In 2016 I left the mill for the canvas. I paint a handful of those shapes at a time, by hand, in mustard, rust and teal, and leave the brush marks in.
