About the Artwork

Martin Ridgeway painted this woman reading painting in the slow hour of a fall afternoon. A young woman sits tucked into a bay window seat with her knees drawn up, an open book propped against them, her face lowered to the page. Her loose hair and the folds of her cream sweater are built from soft, broken strokes, so the light seems to sit right on the wool.

Behind her, the window panes dissolve into dabs of ochre and pale green, and the glow spills across the sill and her bare feet. The cushions are a warm clay pink, a gentle bit of terracotta wall art color against the pale walls and the faded blue of her jeans. It is a true window light painting, all quiet warmth and no fuss.

This is for the book lover wall art shelf in your heart: the person who saves the last chapter for a rainy Sunday, or anyone who likes reading wall art that feels lived in rather than staged. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a friend who always has a novel in her bag.

As canvas wall art, it settles easily into a reading nook, a bedroom, or a cozy living room corner with a throw blanket and a lamp. Its soft palette works well in hygge wall art arrangements and next to bookshelves or other literary wall art pieces.

I paint in a small studio a short walk from Siesta Key, where the Gulf light is soft and the haze rarely lifts before noon. Cutting and stitching sails for nearly twenty years taught me how wind, cloth and water move together. I work in light layers with a soft brush and a little knife work, keeping sand, sea and sky in quiet whites, pale aqua and driftwood tones.
