About the Artwork

A tall fir holds its ground while the storm sweeps right across it. Dorian Whitfield painted the tree in deep spruce green and near-black, then dragged broad strokes of ivory, silver gray and sand over the branches so the snow seems to blow straight through them. Flecks of gold leaf catch in the wind, and long drips run down from the lower boughs like melting ice.

This winter tree canvas art sits somewhere between a landscape and an abstract. Up close you see thick palette-knife texture and scraped paint; step back and the whole fir comes into focus, with a few small touches of red and teal hidden in the needles like faint ornaments.

It suits anyone who wants contemporary Christmas art that feels calm rather than busy. The palette is soft and neutral, so it works as neutral Christmas wall art in December and simply reads as winter wall decor through February.

Hang it above a sofa or console as Christmas wall art for living room spaces, or in an entry where the gold can pick up the light. Printed as canvas wall art, the brushwork and metallic flecks carry well at larger sizes.

A midnight fare to the Virginia Museum in 2015 left me sitting outside for two hours, just thinking. Started taking evening classes that fall while still driving days. The city's industrial textures and late-night conversations with passengers filter into every piece I make.
