About the Artwork

This vernazza painting stacks the village up the cliff the way you remember it from the water. Pink, coral and apricot houses climb toward a red church tower, a stone arch opens onto the harbor, and the word Vernazza is lettered by hand across a breezy blue sky.

Marco Bellandi built it with a palette knife, so every wall and wave is a flat, buttery swipe of paint. The harbor breaks into blue and violet strokes, the rocks glow rose and rust, and two little boats, one red and one orange, sit quietly in the foreground.

It's for anyone who has walked the Cinque Terre trail, dreams of doing it, or simply loves a painting that feels like summer. The colors are bold but friendly, with more warmth than glare.

As canvas wall art, it brings sunshine to a living room, a hallway, or a bedroom wall. Its tall format works well above a console or beside a window, and it pairs easily with whites, warm woods and soft blues.

I spent fifteen winters scraping and varnishing wooden boats in the yards of Camogli, and learned how a blade spreads a thick coat and catches the light. Today the knife does the painting: the stacked houses of the Cinque Terre, harbours at sunset, a lemon or a tray of sardines, laid on in heavy ridges you can almost touch.
