About the Artwork

This timber wolf painting catches the moment just before landing. The wolf springs off a fallen, moss-covered log, front paws reaching out, amber eyes locked straight ahead. Behind him the spruce forest goes teal and violet, with bursts of orange and gold leaves and a warm peach sky breaking through the tops of the trees.

Emory Thatcher built this one with a palette knife, and you can see every pass. The fur is laid down in thick, layered strokes of gray, cream and tan, the log is carved in ribbons of lavender, rust and green, and the birch trunks stand out in pale, ridged slabs of paint. It reads as a forest scene from across the room and as pure texture up close.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves the north woods, wildlife or the energy of an animal in motion. Hikers, hunters, wolf lovers and people drawn to bold, tactile color will all find something to look at here.

As canvas wall art, it works well in a living room, a den or a cabin hallway, and a larger size gives the leap real presence over a sofa or fireplace. The teal and autumn orange tones pair nicely with wood, leather and warm neutrals.

A week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009 taught me to see water differently. The way morning light hit the lake surface became an obsession I'm still chasing in every painting.
