Bennett Hawthorne built this piece the way a cliff builds itself, one layer at a time. Horizontal bands of slate, charcoal and blue-gray stack across the canvas, each one pulled flat with a palette knife so the paint ridges, cracks and curls at the edges like split stone. Through the middle runs a single thin seam of copper, wavering just enough to feel found rather than placed, with a small block of golden ochre tucked lower down.
