About the Artwork

A brown and white longhorn stands knee deep in tall golden grass and looks straight back at you, horns swept wide against a pale blue sky. Valerie Ashby built this Texas longhorn wall art with a palette knife, laying thick ridges of paint that give the coat its patchy rust and cream markings and break the clouds into flat, sunlit planes.

The prairie at the bottom is loose and busy, with blades of grass flicked in ochre, rust and slate blue, while the distant hills fade into a low band of tan. It reads as a true longhorn painting, but the texture keeps it lively and modern rather than stiff.

This is for anyone who loves western wall art with a bit of grit, whether you grew up around cattle, keep a ranch, or just miss Texas skies. Cow wall art lovers and collectors of longhorn cattle painting work will feel right at home with it.

As canvas wall art, it settles easily over a leather sofa, a farmhouse dining table or a stone fireplace, and the warm browns and soft blues pair well with wood, denim and worn brass. Hang it in a living room, den or entryway where that steady gaze can greet people.

People expect peonies, pears and teacups to look soft. Mine don't. I make them from flat slabs of oil set down with a knife, and the ridges and scraped edges do the talking. Twelve years inspecting fabric at a textile mill trained my eye to read surface and texture first. I work from a converted garage studio outside Asheville.
