“I paint in a converted garage studio outside Asheville, where the morning light comes in low over the hills. Twelve years inspecting fabric at a textile mill taught me to read surface and texture before anything else. I build peonies, pears and teacups from flat slabs of oil laid with a knife, letting the ridges and scraped edges do the talking.”

About Valerie

Valerie Ashby paints in a converted garage studio outside Asheville, North Carolina, where low morning light spills over the hills and across her easel. Before she turned to painting full time, she spent twelve years as a quality inspector at a textile mill, running her eyes and fingertips over bolt after bolt of fabric. That work trained her to notice surface and texture before anything else, and it still shapes every canvas she makes. She later earned a BFA in Painting from Western Carolina University.

Working in oil on linen with steel palette knives, Valerie builds peonies, pears and teacups from flat slabs of paint, letting raised ridges and scraped edges carry the form. Her painterly, modern still lifes feel tactile and generous, with color you can almost touch. They bring quiet warmth to kitchens and breakfast nooks, add a fresh note to dining rooms and entryways, and make a gentle focal point in a bedroom or reading corner. Below are Ashby’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
