About the Artwork

Most sunflowers get painted face-on. Colette Mercer turned this one around. You see the back of the bloom, the layered sepals spiraling out from the center, the stem bending up into the head, and the pointed petal tips fanning out past the edges. It's a familiar flower from an angle you rarely stop to look at.

This sunflower painting is done entirely in black, white and grey, built up with a palette knife. Thick ridges of paint run along every leaf and petal, and they catch the light like brushed silver. The stem even has tiny raised bristles. Behind it, long vertical drips and streaks of charcoal and pewter give the background a loose, almost abstract sunflower wall art feel, so the crisp flower really stands out.

It's a good fit for anyone who loves botanical art but wants something quieter than bright yellow. The monochrome palette has the look of a vintage sunflower print, like an old silver gelatin photo, while the heavy texture keeps it feeling fresh and handmade.

As canvas wall art, it works well in a modern living room, a grey or white bedroom, a home office, or a hallway with black frames and clean lines. Hang it where side light from a window can pick up the knife marks.

After fifteen years reading teleprompters, I needed something real to focus on. My neighbor's cat would sit perfectly still in afternoon light, and I started sketching her during lunch breaks. Now I spend mornings painting animals before the world wakes up.
