About the Artwork

A plain wooden stepladder leans against a tall fir standing out in the snow, and only some of the branches have their baubles yet. A few pink and gold ornaments hang near the bottom and sides, while the top reaches up bare into a pale lavender sky. It feels like the person decorating just went back inside for another box.

Caleb Moretti paints this Christmas tree painting in his soft contemporary impressionism. Thick, quick strokes build the green boughs with a dusting of snow, and the drifts at the base pick up peach and blue from a low winter sun over a distant sea. It's contemporary christmas art with a quiet, unfinished story in it.

It suits anyone who loves the slow part of the holidays, the hanging of ornaments one at a time. The soft palette makes it a neutral christmas wall art choice that sits easily with farmhouse christmas wall art, cream textiles and natural wood, and it reads as winter landscape wall art well past December.

Hang it as large christmas canvas wall art above a sofa or mantel, or as christmas wall art for living room walls near the tree itself. Printed as canvas wall art, it's winter wall decor that warms an entryway or dining room just as well.

A rainy Tuesday in 2015 when the library was unusually quiet, I sketched the light coming through the tall windows. That sketch sat on my desk for months before I finally bought paints to finish it properly.
