About the Artwork

Isla Penrose built this staircase almost entirely with a palette knife. Matte black risers alternate with warm bone white treads, each step pressed flat and sharp along its edge, climbing left to right toward a pale ledge. Black paint drips down the side of the flight and runs into a glossy floor that reflects everything above it in streaks of gray and cream.

The wall behind is a field of vertical knife marks in charcoal, ash and ivory, so the steps read like solid blocks set against weathered stone. It's stairwell wall art that feels quiet and architectural, a moody abstract wall art piece where the texture does most of the talking.
