About the Artwork
Derek Holt built this spine painting one vertebra at a time. The five lumbar bones of the lower back stack in a gentle curve, each one shaped from thick, ridged knife impasto that catches light along every edge. Between the discs, warm grey shadows pool, and thin black drips run down the canvas below.
As an anatomy painting, it stays true to the structure, with the rounded bodies and the winged processes reaching to the right, while the palette knife keeps it loose and physical. The background is scraped in layers of grey and off-white, cracked and streaked like an old plaster wall.
This piece of anatomical wall art suits chiropractors, spine surgeons, physical therapists and anyone who spends their days thinking about how the back holds us up. It also works for people who simply like bold, sculptural brushwork in a quiet black and white palette.
Hang this canvas wall art as chiropractic wall art in a treatment room, as medical office wall art behind a front desk, or as waiting room wall art where patients can study it. It brings the same calm presence to physical therapy wall decor or a home study with grey and cream tones.

Materials & Craft
Printed and hand-stretched in the USA, then shipped ready to hang.
The knife goes in loaded, and I drag it until the oil stands up in a ridge, then scrape the edge back clean. That is the same push and pull I used with a steel trowel as a concrete finisher. I keep to black, white and greys, and let thin drips run down loose backgrounds.
This canvas exceeded my expectations. The lion and its reflection are beautifully captured, and the quality of the print is superb. It adds a strong, motivational vibe to my room. I get compliments on it all the time!
Thrilled with the quality, the colors and the prompt delivery. Very impressed with this beautiful artwork! Just what this space needed! Will definitely do business with this company again! My clients loved it!! Thank you!!
