About the Artwork

This lion painting catches the king of the jungle at his least regal moment. He sits upright in a deep teal clawfoot tub, his golden mane soaked flat and dripping in long rust and ochre streaks, staring straight ahead with the flat, unimpressed look of any cat that never asked for a bath.

Kelly Brandt painted it in a mid-century style, with visible brushwork across a warm cream background, crisp outlines on the tub, and a few loose strokes of shadow on the floor. The drips running off the mane and down the tub's rim are the detail that makes people laugh.

It's for anyone who likes their bathroom wall decor with a sense of humor, cat people who know that face well, and households that want a piece guests will ask about. As bathroom canvas wall art, it brings warmth without fuss.

Hang it above the tub or beside the vanity as modern bathroom wall art with a vintage feel. It also works as powder room wall art, where a quick glance at that grumpy lion is all it takes.

I work out of a converted garage in Kansas City with the radio always on. For nine years I dressed department store windows, which taught me to make a shape read from across the street. My mid-century paintings lean bright: saturated mustard, teal and tangerine laid down in flat, confident blocks, with boomerangs, starbursts and leafy forms brushed by hand so the strokes stay visible.
