About the Artwork

Caleb Moretti painted this one from the moment just after first light, when the Great Smoky Mountains live up to their name. Rounded ridges stack back toward the horizon, each one a little paler and bluer than the last, while white mist settles into the valleys between them. Up top, the sky warms from peach to pale gold, laid down in thin, dragged strokes you can almost feel.

Up close, the near slopes break into small dabs of olive, sage and rust, hinting at trees turning in early fall. That soft contemporary impressionism keeps the scene calm rather than dramatic, which is what makes this smoky mountains wall art so easy to live with. It reads as foggy mountain wall art and blue mountain wall art at once, with enough green in the foreground to ground it.

It suits anyone who has driven the Blue Ridge Parkway at sunrise, kept a cabin in Tennessee or North Carolina, or simply wants a quiet view to look at each morning. If you collect mountain art prints, this one brings a gentler, hazier mood than most.

The tall format works well as a mountain range canvas over a console, beside a fireplace, or in a hallway that needs some depth. As mountain wall art living room pieces go, it pairs nicely with wood, linen and stone. This canvas wall art also fits a bedroom or reading nook where you want the room to slow down.

A rainy Tuesday in 2015 when the library was unusually quiet, I sketched the light coming through the tall windows. That sketch sat on my desk for months before I finally bought paints to finish it properly.
