About the Artwork

Malcolm Tate built this sea one knife stroke at a time. Long horizontal ridges of navy, slate and dusty blue stack from the bottom edge almost to the top, leaving only a thin band of linen sky. Thin slate drips run down through the water, and a fine ochre line holds the horizon in place. Up close, the thick paint catches the light along every ridge.

This is the first panel of a set of 3 blue wall art verticals, and it opens the series with the most water and the least sky. As palette knife abstract art, it reads as pure texture and color up close and as an abstract horizon painting from across the room. Touches of gold and cream break through the blue like late light on the surface.

It suits anyone who loves the ocean but wants something quieter than a beach scene. If you are drawn to coastal abstract wall art, dusty blue wall art or a calm navy and cream wall art palette, this piece fits right in. Hang it alone or with its two companions as a blue triptych wall art grouping.

The tall format works well beside a bed, in a narrow hallway, or flanking a sofa with the other two panels. It pairs easily with white oak, linen upholstery and brass, and it brings depth to a room styled with neutral coastal wall art. Printed as canvas wall art, it keeps the feel of the original navy blue abstract wall art Malcolm painted.

People hear my subjects are hospital hallways and expect something grim and literal. What I make is closer to the feeling than the place. Eight years of night shifts left me with places nobody stops to notice, fluorescent corridors and the quiet between emergencies. Exhaustion and hope. I turn those memories into abstract forms that feel heavy and weightless.

It looks amazing!

It looks amazing! The material creates the look of natural texture, even without raised detail.
