About the Artwork

This santa and reindeer painting keeps things simple. Santa stands in a wide, empty field of snow, one green mitten resting on the neck of a single reindeer, and the two of them look out across the white together. No sleigh, no sack, no crowd. Just an old friend and his companion sharing a still moment.

Sylvie Aldridge built it up with a palette knife, laying down thick ridges of paint you can almost feel. The sky breaks into slabs of aqua, lavender and soft peach, the snow is a patchwork of cream and pale rose, and Santa's red coat and white fur trim are pressed on in heavy, confident strokes. It has the gentle feel of old world santa art with a fresh, textured surface.

It suits anyone who loves Christmas but prefers a calm scene over a busy one, and it makes a thoughtful santa claus art print for a family that brings out the same decorations every year. The pastel sky and snow also let it work as winter wall art well past the holidays.

Hang this canvas wall art above a sofa or mantel as Christmas wall art for living room spaces, in an entry where guests arrive, or in a cozy reading corner. It sits easily among other christmas canvas prints and holiday wall art without fighting for attention.

After years creating costumes for Boston theater productions, I discovered that mixing pigments felt just like dyeing fabrics. The transition from dressing characters to painting biblical scenes happened gradually, but the storytelling instinct remained the same.
