About the Artwork

This piece of running wall art catches the first split second of a sprint. A faceless runner drives off the starting blocks low and flat, back leg still pressing hard into the block, front knee punching up, opposite arm swinging through. Ashley Newman builds the body with thick palette knife strokes in copper, rust and deep blue, and long streaks trail behind the figure like a wake of pure speed.

The color does a lot of the work here. Burnt orange track lanes, a sky smeared with teal, cream and tangerine, and loose dark hair whipping back all push the eye forward. It reads as an abstract sports painting up close and a clear, powerful athlete from across the room.

It's made for sprinters, coaches, former track kids and anyone who loves the moment the gun goes off. As track and field wall art or a gift for an athlete wall art collector, it carries that start-line energy without a single word on it.

Hang this canvas wall art as gym wall art above a squat rack, as workout room decor beside the treadmill, or as garage gym decor where you need a push before the last set. It also suits an exercise room wall art spot in a home office or a teen's bedroom.

My studio is a rowhouse basement in Baltimore with a single window facing the alley. Designing lights for nightclubs taught me how hot color pops when everything around it goes black. I lay down deep city blacks first, then scrape hot pink, teal and acid yellow across the surface with squeegees and old credit cards, keeping the marks raw and quick.
