About the Artwork

A golden retriever at full stretch, front paws reaching, ears lifted by the wind and tongue out in that happy, open-mouthed grin every owner knows. Calder Whitman painted the coat in warm amber and honey washes, then let the color break loose behind the dog in splashes of teal, cobalt, rose and saffron that trail off like the energy of the run itself.

The technique is loose but deliberate. Fine white highlights pick out the feathered fur on the chest, legs and tail, while drips and flicks of pigment scatter across the bright white paper. Beneath the paws, a band of blended color reads like a reflection on wet ground, anchoring all that motion.

This golden retriever art print is made for anyone who has been greeted at the door by a goldie, or who still smiles thinking about one. It makes a warm gift for a new dog owner, a lifelong retriever family, or someone remembering a best friend.

As canvas wall art, it brings life to a mudroom, entryway, family room or home office. The white background keeps it light and airy, so it sits easily in bright modern spaces as well as cozy, lived-in rooms full of dog beds and leashes by the door.

Coaching high school basketball for twelve years taught me about movement and momentum. When I retired from teaching in 2014, I started capturing that same energy in watercolor paintings of athletes mid-action.
