“Coaching high school basketball for twelve years taught me about movement and momentum. When I retired from teaching in 2014, I started capturing that same energy in watercolor paintings of athletes mid-action.”
Calder Whitman spent twelve years coaching high school basketball and learned a lot about movement and momentum. After retiring from teaching in 2014, the former gym teacher began capturing that energy in paint. Whitman works from Denver, Colorado, and holds a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Oregon.
In a watercolor style with an expressionist edge, blues, whites and silvers bleed together in loose washes. Game day is the main subject, from stadium bowls seen from above to football helmets bursting out of splashes of color, with scenes drawn from cities such as Green Bay and Chicago. The canvases below are Whitman’s best sellers in our shop.
