About the Artwork

Green and gold ribbons of aurora sweep across a deep blue night sky, curling down toward a ring of dark spruce. Below, a frozen lake catches the glow, and a bright red canoe rests upside down in the snow at the water's edge. It's a quiet, cold scene that still feels warm.

Marlo Shepard painted this northern lights painting in a vibrant modern impressionist style. The sky is built from long, streaky strokes that make the lights look like they're moving, while the snow is laid on in thick, chunky dabs of cream, pale blue and gold. Dry winter grasses poke through in tawny flicks of brown.

This is northern lights wall art for anyone who has paddled a lake in summer and wondered what it looks like in deep winter, or for cabin lovers, campers and people who simply love a good winter scene painting. The red canoe gives the eye a place to land and adds a cheerful pop of color.

As canvas wall art, it works beautifully as winter wall art for living room spaces, above a fireplace, or in a lodge-style den or bedroom. The tall format suits a narrow wall or a hallway, and its blues and greens pair easily with wood, stone and woven textures.
