About the Artwork

One open poppy and one round seed head, side by side on long, wavering stems. Mikkel Thorsen outlines both in a fine, continuous dark line, then lets thick strokes of cream and warm gray build up the crinkled, cupped petals. A blush wash sits at the heart of the flower like a stain of colour that soaked in on its own.

This poppy painting keeps things spare. The stems carry tiny bristles drawn with a light hand, the seed head wears its little ridged crown, and the background is brushed in loose layers of ivory and sand so you can still see the paint moving. It reads as one line drawing wall art with the softness of a real painting.

It suits anyone who likes quiet rooms and natural tones, the kind of person drawn to japandi wall art, linen bedding and pale oak. If you have been looking for neutral minimalist wall art that still has a bit of warmth, this one brings it through that single touch of blush.

Hang it above a bed as minimalist bedroom wall art, or go bigger in a living room or entry where large minimalist wall art can breathe against a plain wall. This canvas wall art also works in a reading corner or a calm home office.

My rule: stop before a band turns heavy. I brush thin bands of grey, sand and white and keep only what is needed, a habit of order and restraint from years as a harbor master's clerk. Since leaving Denmark, I work in a narrow Astoria studio above the Columbia River. Each canvas should feel as soft as sea fog.
