About the Artwork

Garrett Sommers painted this one with a palette knife and plenty of paint. A single weathered blue board reads Swim Club in chalk white, hand-brushed letters, nailed to two driftwood posts at the edge of a backyard pool. The paint on the board is chipped back to bare wood in spots, and a gray picket fence and tufts of beach grass sit behind it.

Below the sign, a strip of turquoise water ripples in thick, flat strokes, catching the reflection of the posts. The impasto texture gives every surface a sun-bleached, lived-in feel, like the board has seen a lot of summers. Years as a bicycle mechanic taught me how things fit together, and I still think of a painting as parts locking into place. I build bridges, grain elevators and snowy streets from knife-laid planes of oil, warm brick against cold blue shadow, with the paint ridges left raw.
