About the Artwork

Riomaggiore climbs the cliff in thick, buttery slabs of color here. Coral, tomato red, pink, sunflower yellow and sky blue houses stack on top of each other, each one dotted with small dark windows, while the sea below turns from turquoise to deep cobalt. The name is lettered by hand across the pale blue sky at the top.

Marco Bellandi built this palette knife painting stroke by stroke, laying the paint on flat and heavy so every wall, rock and ripple of water keeps the mark of the blade. Look closely at the rocks near the waterline and you will see grays, browns and pinks pressed together, with two little white boats resting in the cove.

It is a fit for anyone who has walked the Cinque Terre trails, anyone still planning the trip, or anyone who simply wants a room full of Ligurian color. It makes a cheerful gift for travelers and lovers of Italian coastal towns.

Hang this canvas wall art in a bright living room, a sunny kitchen, an entryway or above a desk where you want a daily dose of summer. The tall format works well on a narrow wall or beside a window, and the blues pair easily with white, natural wood and coastal decor.

I spent fifteen winters scraping and varnishing wooden boats in the yards of Camogli, and learned how a blade spreads a thick coat and catches the light. Today the knife does the painting: the stacked houses of the Cinque Terre, harbours at sunset, a lemon or a tray of sardines, laid on in heavy ridges you can almost touch.
