About the Artwork

Paul Kessler built this piece from the ground up, one horizontal veil at a time. A deep charcoal band sits at the bottom, then taupe, then a cool blue-grey, then sand. Each layer is paler than the one beneath it until the whole thing dissolves into a wide field of cream, like morning mist lifting off water.

This is muted abstract wall art you can feel up close. The palette knife left ridges, torn edges and thin lifted seams along every band, and faint stains drift through the cream like weathered plaster. It reads as a neutral abstract painting from across the room and as textured abstract wall art when you walk up to it.

It suits anyone drawn to wabi sabi wall art, where wear and imperfection are part of the beauty, and people who want serene wall art that settles a room instead of filling it. The quiet palette also sits naturally with japandi wall art and taupe wall art collections.

Hang this canvas wall art above a linen sofa, a low bed, or a simple console where the tall format can breathe. It also works as minimalist bathroom wall art beside stone and pale wood, or as a calm focal point among other minimalist canvas wall art in a study or entry.

I paint in a small cabin studio on the edge of Asheville, where the ridges fade into blue haze every afternoon. Fifteen years reading X-rays taught me how much form can live in pale, quiet tones. My work uses thin oil washes on lightly primed canvas, a single stroke of soft charcoal gray, and wide empty fields that leave room for the eye to rest.
