About the Artwork

A lone sandstone arch stands against a pale cream sky, its curve framing a far-off stretch of desert mesas. Bennett Hawthorne built every surface with a palette knife, stacking thick slabs of ochre, burnt orange and dusty pink the way wind and time stack real rock. You can almost run your hand along the ridges.

This large textured wall art piece sits between landscape and abstraction. Up close the arch breaks into flat, chunky planes and little flecks of pink and blue; step back and it settles into warm afternoon light on stone. The sky is laid in broad, plaster-like strokes that keep the whole painting calm.

It suits anyone who loves the Southwest, long road trips through canyon country, or simply warm earth tones with real surface depth. If you like textured abstract wall art but want something with a sense of place, this one lands right in the middle.

As neutral living room wall art it anchors a sofa wall in sand, rust and cream tones, and it works just as well as neutral wall art for dining room spaces with wood and linen. Printed as canvas wall art, it brings the warmth of the desert to any room that needs it.

After years mixing cocktails in Manhattan dive bars, I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2015. The morning fog rolling over these hills reminded me why I loved painting before life got complicated. Now I spend my days chasing that soft light through the seasons.
