About the Artwork

Fiona Callahan painted this river as if you were flying high above it. A wide ivory ribbon snakes from the bottom corner up toward a pale horizon, each bend edged in flakes of gold leaf. Thick palette-knife strokes give the water a raked, glossy texture, with streaks of navy and slate running along its inner curves.

The banks are built up in layered slabs of deep forest green, chocolate brown, dusty plum and blush, laid down like cracked plaster. Thin drips fall from the edges of the banks, a loose touch that keeps the whole piece from feeling too tidy. It reads as a landscape at first glance and as pure texture up close, which is why we count it among our favorite pieces of large abstract canvas wall art.

This is for anyone who likes textured abstract wall art with a story underneath it. The cream and sand tones keep it calm, while the gold and the dark water give it enough contrast to hold attention from across a room.

Hang it above a sofa as neutral living room wall art, over a long sideboard, or at the end of a hallway where the winding line can pull the eye forward. Printed as canvas wall art, it brings Fiona's brushwork and warm earthy palette into any space that leans soft and natural.

After years staring at screens cutting film footage, I needed something tactile. Started with collages in my Brooklyn apartment in 2016, tearing up old magazines and newspapers. Now I layer paint over found materials, creating symbols that mean something different to everyone who sees them.
