About the Artwork

A grizzly steps out of the conifers just as the light goes. Head low, nose to the air, all four paws planted on the dry ground. Bennett Hawthorne built every inch of fur with a palette knife, laying thick ridges of chestnut, tan and near-black so the coat seems to shift as you walk past.

Behind the bear, dark spruce and bare trunks crowd the frame in deep greens and slate blues, with a last streak of amber sky breaking through at the top. The meadow grass glows gold and rust, and the long claws catch small flecks of pale light. It is dark moody wall art with real weight to it, both in the subject and in the paint.

This man cave wall art is for anyone who spends their weekends in the backcountry, keeps a hunting cabin, or just likes a painting with some quiet tension in it. It suits people who want wildlife art that feels raw and hand-made rather than polished.

Hang this canvas wall art over a leather sofa in a den, above a bar cart, or in a wood-paneled study. It also works as moody wall art for living room walls painted in charcoal, olive or warm brown, where the gold highlights in the grass will really come forward.

After years mixing cocktails in Manhattan dive bars, I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2015. The morning fog rolling over these hills reminded me why I loved painting before life got complicated. Now I spend my days chasing that soft light through the seasons.
