About the Artwork

This basset hound has accepted bath time, but only barely. Bennett Hawthorne painted him with his chin parked on the rim of a clawfoot tub, those famously long ears hanging over the side and dripping in little rivulets onto the floor. The droopy eyes say everything about how he feels about it.

Hawthorne built the whole scene with a palette knife, laying the paint on thick so every stroke leaves a ridge. The background is a patchwork of cream, blush pink and soft lavender, the tub picks up cool blues and violets, and the rich chestnut of the ears gives the eye somewhere warm to land. Even the silver clawed feet have that sculpted, buttery texture.

This is funny bathroom canvas art for anyone who has ever wrestled a dog into the tub, or anyone who simply loves a hound with a hangdog face. It makes a great gift for basset owners and a cheerful pick for a family bath or a kids' bathroom.

As bathroom wall decor it brings a soft pastel palette that works with white tile, gray vanities or wood accents. Hang this canvas wall art above the tub, beside the mirror, or as powder room wall art where guests will catch it and grin.

After years mixing cocktails in Manhattan dive bars, I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2015. The morning fog rolling over these hills reminded me why I loved painting before life got complicated. Now I spend my days chasing that soft light through the seasons.
