About the Artwork

This little cardinal has puffed himself into a round ball of feathers against the cold, perched on a snowy alder twig hung with tiny cones and catkins. Mason Hollis painted his chest in layered washes of orange and red, with fine dry-brush strokes for each fluffy feather and a crisp black mask around that bright coral beak.

The splash watercolor style keeps it lively. Soft lavender clouds drift across the top, golden late-afternoon light warms the bird, and loose drips of slate blue and rust run down the paper like the paint is still wet. It's a cardinal painting that feels cozy and a little wild at the same time.

It's a good fit for bird watchers, anyone who keeps a feeder stocked all winter, or someone who wants holiday wall art that can stay up well past January. As seasonal wall art, it bridges the first snow and the last cold snap without looking out of place.

Hang this canvas wall art above a reading chair, in an entryway, or on a kitchen wall that needs some warmth. It also works as christmas wall art for living room walls, pairing easily with wood tones, cream walls, and plaid throws, and makes a thoughtful piece of winter canvas wall art or holiday canvas art for a gift.

After coordinating hundreds of weddings, I craved something quieter and more personal. Animals became my focus in 2013 when I started painting my neighbor's rescue dogs. The loose, expressive brushwork feels like freedom after years of managing timelines and vendor lists.
