About the Artwork

She stands at the edge of the terrace with her back to us, a long white dress pooling on the tiles and a wide straw hat tipped toward the water. Beyond the balustrade the sea goes on in thick strokes of cobalt and turquoise, with pale mountains and a few small sails in the distance.

Valentina Ricci builds this figurative painting with a loaded palette knife. The dress is all ridges of white and soft lilac, the tree overhead is laid in with quick dabs of lime and yellow, and red and pink roses spill in from both sides. A little café table with a green bottle waits beside her, and fallen petals scatter across the sunlit floor.

It's for anyone who has a summer in Italy tucked away in memory, or one still on the wish list. The mood is easy and unhurried, the kind of afternoon where nobody checks the time.

As canvas wall art, it brings light and color to a living room, a bedroom, or a sunny entry. The blues pair well with coastal and white-walled rooms, while the rose reds add warmth near wood furniture and natural textures.

I drew catwalk looks for Milan fashion houses for six years, fast, a few strokes per dress. When I started painting I kept the speed and left the catwalk behind. My women are seen from behind on a terrace in Positano or at a café table with a spritz, in quick, loose strokes of orange, fuchsia and sea blue.
