About the Artwork

A grey donkey stands in tall late-summer grass just as the sun drops behind the hills. The light comes from behind him, so his long ears, his bristly mane and the fuzzy edge of his coat all catch a warm rim of gold. He looks a little sleepy, a little curious, and completely at home.

Mae Holliday painted this in her vibrant modern impressionism style, with thick, confident knife and brush strokes. The sky breaks into blocks of peach and butter yellow, the far hills turn lavender and slate, and a band of teal runs through the middle distance. Dabs of pink, violet and white scatter through the grass like wildflowers. Among our farm animal paintings, this one has the most glow.

It's for anyone who loves a gentle animal with a lot of personality, or who wants country wall decor that feels fresh rather than old-fashioned. As farm animal wall art it brings warmth without leaning on kitsch, and the loose, colorful handling makes it a natural piece of modern rustic wall art.

Hang this farmhouse canvas wall art over a sideboard as farmhouse dining room wall art, or let it anchor an entry or reading nook. Sized up, it works as large farmhouse wall art above a sofa, and its golden tones sit beautifully with wood, linen and warm white walls.

Mae Holliday

After years of traveling with Ringling Brothers, I settled in Nashville and started painting the horses I'd worked with. My design background helps me compose scenes, but it's the memory of those animals that drives every brushstroke.
