About the Artwork

One big sugar maple has stepped out ahead of the treeline, and it's carrying the whole season on its branches. This fall landscape painting by Emory Thatcher sets that tree in an open golden meadow, with birches, spruces and orange-leafed trees lined up behind it under a wide blue sky full of cream clouds.

Emory built it entirely with a palette knife. Every leaf is its own thick ridge of rust, copper and amber paint, and the grass is laid in flat, sweeping strokes of olive, wheat and lavender where the low sun throws long purple shadows. Up close you can see the edges of the paint standing off the surface. From across the room it reads as light moving through a crisp afternoon.

It's for anyone who counts down to October, likes a landscape with real texture in it, and wants the warmth of autumn in the house all year. Collectors of landscape canvas prints will appreciate how the knife work holds up at full size.

As canvas wall art it makes an easy choice for wall art above couch spaces, where the wide meadow gives the eye somewhere to rest. It also works as large dining room wall art, bringing those rusts and golds to the table, or as large nature wall art in a study or entryway.

A week-long canoe trip through the Boundary Waters in 2009 taught me to see water differently. The way morning light hit the lake surface became an obsession I'm still chasing in every painting.
